Bicycle Victoria Announces Bike Path Work

Bicycle on-road path to continue despite resident opposition
Bicycle Victoria Announces Bike Path Work
Bikes, trailers, pull-alongs on our back porch

Remember when hundreds of Eaglemont, Heidelberg and Ivanhoe residents gave Banyule Council feedback opposing an on-road bike path through our local streets?

Things went very quiet for over a year.

Council staff started reporting to the elected Council about "general support" from Banyule residents in the context of multi-Council plans for recreational cycling paths out to the north.

Well Bicycle Victoria have let the the cat out of the bag.

Heard anything from Banyule Council?

Nope.

So much for "community engagement".

How about that!

Road cycling is in the news frequently during le Tour de France. Very popular, great scenery, good commentary, exciting competition.

On road - with the roads closed to all traffic.

Road cycling locally was in the news as former North Melbourne footballer Glen Archer was fined for his lane-changing truck & trailer knocking a cyclist off his bike on a main road.

Vehicle safety. Pedestrian safety. Cyclist safety. Home safety. Fire safety.

Everyone is for safety.

The problem arises when people want to push the limits to discover where safe ends and unsafe starts.

There is a bizarre component to the determination of cyclists to ride "on road" - motorists who have forever paid fuel taxes, excises, license fees and insurance premiums for a road network are being asked to concede it to a group that, as cyclists, pay none of these imposts.

Do I own a bike? Yep.
