Fur, Feathers, Flowers and More #18

Natural history is all around you
Fur, Feathers, Flowers and More #18

Readers who appreciate our use of Australian native plants may like to visit the Spring Sale and Flower Show of the Australian Plant Society Yarra Yarra Branch at Eltham.

Many of the plants we have put in along the rail corridor have been sourced from or even donated by the APS YY.

Native plants from tubestock size up to 10" pots are on sale from the club and specialist commercial nurseries.

Be smart - take along your own box, because if you attend you will buy some of the amazing array of plants.

Bird of the Week

Kookaburra

Up between Studley Road and Upper Heidelberg Road we have kookaburras regularly regaling the neighbourhood with their laughter.

Merry, merry king of the bush

It really is the sound of the Australian bush - a kookaburra warbling away. How fortunate to have them in suburbia too.

Add in the carolling of magpies and it is a great way to enjoy the dawn of a new day.

Beast of the Week

Blue-tongued Skink

Often kept as pets, or fed and cared-for in gardens.

A handy way of keeping on top of garden pest insects is to have a shiny sleek blue-tongued skink on the prowl.

Flower of the Week

Isopogon formosus

Referred to as "coneflowers" the isopogons make a dramatic display.

We have a fine specimen in flower about halfway between the station entrance and the Fairy Garden.
