Fur, Feathers, Flowers and More #21

Natural history in and around Eaglemont
Fur, Feathers, Flowers and More #21
A further example of an All Australian arrangement of wildflowers

Mulch spread along the Sherwood Road plantings has certainly lifted the presentation of our plants.

Thanks again to the team that have beavered away on this task.

Plant of the Week

Pimelea ferruginea

There are some 80 species of Rice Flowers, but the rosy pink of ferriginea takes some beating.

Beast of the Week

Fallow Deer

Cute enough but a major feral pest to Australia's biodiversity
Distribution of Fallow Deer

I admit to being a little surprised when Rowan walked into the cafe recently and announced he had been held up crossing Burke Road bridge by a vehicle hitting a deer!

Not sure it was a Fallow Deer but this is one of the feral species known to be close in to Melbourne.

Nillumbik Council to our north have several web pages on the issue - awkwardly there are also many hunter focused websites.

Bird of the Week

Willy Wagtail

One of Australia's most widespread birds

Pert and active, the Willy Wagtail is our largest fantail.

One of the tidiest nests you will ever see, the upright cup is made primarily of dry grasses bound together with an outer layer of spider web.

The males put on a magnificent & noisy "wounded" display to draw intruders away from their mate on a nest.
