Know Your Place # 11
Understand the evolution of the place we call home
Well before the time of Google maps, before GPS, before Melways - even before motor vehicles - there were street directories of our neighbourhood published.
Rudimentary maybe but you had much more time to interpret your street map and look about for landmarks in horse and buggy days.
Nilss has forwarded an excerpt from an 1893 street directory of Heidelberg, just five years after the railway was put through.
We will assume the cartographer and the publisher were not trying to confuse or trick us.
How many differences between present day features - and the fragment of what we now call Eaglemont depicted in the map - can you detect?
A Google Maps screenshot is supplied to help you.
