A Big THANK YOU!!
Many thanks to those who are helping with watering our more recent plantings, and some particularly stressed plants. Although we have had some decent rain events recently, the underlying conditions are still very dry. Hot days (and wind) make things very challenging for most plants and particularly the younger, less established ones. With no significant rain forecast for the near future, tomorrow forecast to be over 40 and and the possibility of quite a few more hot days in the next 6 weeks or so, we are very grateful to anyone who does some watering.
A predecessor to Friends of Eaglemont Village?
The Sun News Pictorial, 25.05.1940, Page 6 under the title Self Help: It is to be hoped the Railways Commissioners respond to the generous offer of Eaglemont Progress Association to beautify the railway station nature strip (which has been sadly neglected) with trees and shrubs. This association is to be commended.-OBSERVER (Heidelberg). Thank you to Nilss for finding this! Does anyone know if they took up the offer back then? What we are doing now on railway land is done by us as the 'Eaglemont Stationeers' group.
Eaglemont Station history - from Nilss
The Age, 11.02.1926, Page 10 PROPOSED STATION AT EAGLEMONT.
The monetary contribution required by the Railways Commissioners having been satisfactorily arranged by residents and property owners in the district, the work of constructing the new railway station at Eaglemont will commence this week. It is anticipated that the station will be ready for use in about three months. The station will be between Ivanhoe and Heidelberg stations, approximately 47 chains from each, and will serve a well populated area. The platform will be on the Studley-road side of the line, and will be connected with Silverdale-road on the opposite side by an overhead bridge.
A request has been made to the shire council that a certain number of shopping sites be allowed in the neighborhood. The council has agreed to allow seventeen sites.
Note - Initially there was an overhead bridge above the single track railway line at Eaglemont station - the current pedestrian subway was built when the line was duplicated and the new station building opened, in 1949.
- Nilss has been finding lots of other snippets referring to Eaglemont - follow the link at the end of this email for some interesting reading.
Mystery plant ...
The plant we could not identify (see last month's Newsletter) is a eucalyptus rosacea. It doesn't have a common name, so can anyone suggest one?
