Road Safety Is Our Collective Responsibility

We all benefit from improved road safety
Road Safety Is Our Collective Responsibility

It is all too easy to believe it is someone else's responsibility, someone else's fault when it comes to road safety.

Increasingly we are required to share finite public spaces and facilities - including roads and footpaths.

We can all fall for the trap of becoming frustrated and impatient with traffic conditions, too few parking spaces, the behaviour of others.

As we age a certain intolerance of new conditions can creep up on us - we yearn for the simpler, easier "good old days".

Perhaps as we age or have medical conditions afflict us we have slower reaction times, more difficulty concentrating, fatigue more easily, do not assimilate & process information as quickly.

My friend and former workmate Jim Giddings does valuable community service in retirement as a road safety advocate.

He has passed on for wider distribution some road safety information for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

I encourage you to get comfortable with a cuppa and a biscuit or two, and do a bit of road safety reading.

These pages provide road rule reminders and advice covering the following topics:

·  Giving way when turning right and to pedestrians

·  Watch out for bicycle riders when opening your car door

·   Stopping at tram stops

·  Hook turns

·  Spaces for riding bikes

·  Riding a bike at night

·  Who can cycle on a footpath

·  Sharing the road with trucks

To learn more about our road rules, we encourage you to read our A-Z of Road Rules.

For more information about sharing the road please refer to the following pages:
