CORRECTION – the subway is older than stated in January’s Newsletter.
The Eaglemont station subway is nearly as old as the station itself!
EAGLEMONT VILLA SITES AND SHOP SITES Eaglemont is one of the most favored spots around the city, and now with its own railway station will develop into one of the most profitable suburbs and land values will rise in proportion. The Railways Department has decided to make a subway into the station platform instead of an overhead bridge, thereby showing their faith in the possibilities of the suburb, as this is not done at many of the new stations recently opened. SUBWAY AT EAGLEMONT STATION. In connection with the improvements at the new station at Eaglemont, between Ivanhoe and Heidelberg, the railway authorities have agreed to construct a subway for the convenience of passengers. The Argus, 22.07.1926, Page 18
Seats Used To Make Path Through Flood Railway employees saw to it that residents did not have to wade through deep water when the rain flooded the subway at Eaglemont station on Saturday. They placed seats from the station platform down the centre of the subway, and passengers walked along these to the higher levels while a gang of railwaymen worked to remove the water. PROPOSED STATION AT EAGLEMONT. At a meeting of the Heidelberg and District Progress Association on Tuesday night, it was decided to write to request the Railways department that the proposed new station buildings at Eaglemont, between Ivanhoe and Heidelberg should be erected in conformity with buildings in the locality. Several members complained that the department frequently used "secondhand" portable buildings for new stations. Objection was also taken to the action of the Railways department in calling upon persons living near a new station to contribute to the cost of its erection. The Argus, 12.06.1925, Page 5
Line duplication
LABOUR PROBLEM DELAYS RAIL IMPROVEMENTS Building of a second railway track between Alphington and Heidelberg had been hampered by lack of man-power, the Railways Commissioners said yesterday. Only 90 men were engaged on the project at present, they said. It would include the building of new station buildings and platforms at Darebin and Eaglemont, duplication of the bridge over Darebin Creek, and a pedestrian subway at Darebin.
