Apologies for the length of this update, but there is much happening in the Environmental area if you are interested, so please keep scrolling down!

THANK YOU!

A HUGE Thank you to all who turned out for this weekend's working bee. Sherwood Road around the Fairy Garden looks so much better for the weeding and pruning the group achieved.  It was lovely to welcome some new people! Photos below show us after we finished, and enjoying well earned coffees outside the Dish afterwards.

November is a busy month for Environmental activities - scroll down for more information (this information courtesy of Banyule Council's Greenwrap e-newsletter):

National Recycling Week

It’s National Recycling Week from the 10th to 16th of November, and Banyule Council are rounding up plastic, aluminium, steel and glass containers, and paper and cardboard for a cleaner, greener community.

Visit the Waste Education Team at the Malahang Festival on November 16 where there will be a Recycling Ranch! There will be guessing games, hands-on activities, and fun for the whole family.

Rustie from Rethink Recycling will be there ready to show how your old plastics can be transformed into something brand new and exciting!

The Council team will be on hand to answer all your recycling and waste questions, and help with ideas about how to reduce, repair, reuse, and recycle to help keep our community a beautiful place to live!

Bogong Moth Tracker 1 September - 31 December

Each spring, endangered Bogong Moths start an amazing migration across Australia to our alpine zone. At the same time, Mountain Pygmy-possums wake up from hibernation hungry for nutritious Bogong Moths to eat. But over recent years, Bogong Moths have not been arriving to the alpine regions in the numbers needed, raising concern for the survival of the moths and leaving the Mountain Pygmy-possums without their primary food source. We’re helping Zoos Victoria scientists track where they are and when they might arrive.

Help Zoos Victoria track the Bogong Moth!

Frog ID Week 7 November - 16 November

Australia has over 250 known species of frog, almost all of which are found nowhere else in the world. Some species are flourishing, like the Striped Marsh Frog. But others have declined dramatically since the 1980s, and at least four have become extinct. Frogs play a crucial role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. As environmental indicators, they provide early warnings about changes in environmental health.

Participate in Frog ID week to help our frog populations! Using the free FrogID app, you can record the frogs calling around you and help us count Australia’s frogs.

Australian Pollinator Week - The Australian Pollinator Count 8 November - 16 November

Each November, Australian Pollinator Week shines a spotlight on the important and unique pollinators in Australia, including native bees, butterflies, beetles, birds, bats and other pollinators.

Taking part is quick and easy. You simply need to observe some flowers for 2 minutes, record the pollinators you see and register your results. To learn more, please visit: Australian Pollinator Count – Australian Pollinator Week

Bugs in My Backyard Week 17 November - 23 November

Step into the hidden world just beyond your doorstep! With only your phone and a curious eye, you can join thousands of Australians uncovering the extraordinary invertebrates that live in our gardens, parks and schoolyards. Become part of a national movement of everyday people contributing to real science and wildlife protection!

Each photo you upload to Bug Hunt Australia on iNaturalist adds to vital knowledge – helping protect lesser-known but critical species and detect invasive species before they spread.
